It's pretty obvious that technology is increasingly being used in sport to aid officials and enhance television coverage, but there's a lot going on behind the scenes too. Here is a look at tech that the AFL's Adelaide Crows are using to improve their on-ground performance.

Training tech

The Crows developed their own software called Video Coach for use as a self-teaching tool. It uses Adobe Flash and Flex to present selected video clips, which can be stopped at critical points to display a graphics overlay. This can highlight the gameplay of one or more players, or deliver notes about the game situation. The software can also pose questions, such as "Is it better to pass the ball to player A or B?". This helps players assess what they should do in particular circumstances and checks that the coaching messages are getting through.

During the off-season, the club began putting even more training video clips online for players to review. After a session finishes, coaching staff select relevant segments and upload them. Thanks to a relationship with Internode and a microwave link to the ground, this is usually done within two or three hours, depending on the coach's schedule. "The quicker they [the players] get feedback, the more they relate it to the experience," said Mark Upton, specialist coach — offence and skills acquisitio

The content selected by the coaching staff also has video hosted by . Upton said that according to one player, "it's just like YouTube". It is left to players to keep up with the content and Upton admitted that it can be a challenge to get them involved with the blog. Now, players are expected to review the relevant clips the night before so there are more informed and constructive discussions of the actual issues. "It's a better way of doing it," said Up

In addition to side-on footage from broadcasts, clubs pay for a high-angle view from behind the goals to get complete coverage. Like most AFL clubs — and teams in many other sports — the Adelaide Crows use the software from for video analysis. The team has key performance indicators covering various aspects of the game and coaches can quickly hone in on areas where the team is falling short, such as losing too many midfield stoppages. Upton noted that watching a series of similar clips means "you get a much clearer picture" and can therefore work out what's goin

Game day

During the game, the Adelaide Crows staff use Adobe LiveCycle Collaboration Services (a hosted, pay-per-use service) to link the coaches' box with the bench. This improves communication and reduces errors compared with the old practice of trying to keep two whiteboards synchronised by talking on the phone. It also allows an extra person to record what happens without having to travel to away games. Noise in the coaches' box should be further reduced by the club's plan to make additional use of the LiveCycle's text chat facility. For instance, the club doctor could use it to report how long it will take him to evaluate a player's

The club's opposition scouts, who have the task of reporting on the performance of other teams and on away ground conditions for upcoming matches, use another in-house application to send and store information. Upton said this is a far more satisfactory system than the previous practice of transmitting handwritten reports by fax, as the information is much more easily re

So how does the club compare on the technology front with others in the competition? "It's hard to say," admitted Upton. "We're up there, but all clubs have access to the technology." The advantage comes from how you use it and "we'd like to think we're doing that reasonabl

Chuck-A Luck is the origin of a popular board game that a lot of people call Blackjack. See also Article History. Alternative name: sweat-soil. Chuck-A Luck, also known as sweat-soil, dice, game of luck, which is rooted in the French name of the exact same word,"throw" and a slang expression for luck.

It's played with a standard deck of playing cards, with the usual poker rules, except that it's sometimes offered with a few decks, each holding one or more decks of cards. The thing is to get as many cards as possible into the pot with the maximum possible score, at the expense of losing the game. (Other versions sometimes provide bonus rounds, where additional cards are thrown into the pot with the regular round; if those rounds end without hitting the card worth, then the player loses, but not usually.)

The origin of this name Chuck-A-Luck comes from the German phrase,"vermennen zu rein." That means"to have a little luck." In these variants, but the phrase"vermennen zu rein" means"to have a little luck in prosperity." In any event, it's a simple variation on the theme. Chuck-A-Luck thus derives from the phrases"to have a little chance in abundance," and"to have a little fortune in prosperity."

The game is usually played with a single side playing with the standard deck of 52 cards, the other side using only half that number, usually the tinhorn. If the tinhorn team hits the Jack-o-lantern, it has to subtract ten from its own cards to bring up the minimum which they may have to draw. (So if there are thirteen cards in the deck, and the group needs eleven, the person who makes the maximum hand will get to choose whether or not to pull the jack-o-lantern.) If the tinhorn team hits the jack-o-lantern as it will, they shed. The winning team in the end wins if it has more cards than the losing team, and if all of the cards are either A's or B's, the team which has the most A's becomes the winner. There's also another variant that sees the winning player obtaining the pot instead of the regular prize in the event the regular prize has already been paid out, but this is less common.

As with most games of chance, the chances of winning are based largely on statistics, and how blessed the specific player is. Of course, the house advantage can increase the odds, making a particular hand seem more likely to win than it is. But as long as there are at least three dice, and as long as at least one of them is a seven or six, then every team is very likely to have at least a chance of winning. It is not impossible to beat the house advantage, but it's very difficult to do so when you add the odds against the possible results to the odds, and the possibility of getting the jack-o-lantern is relatively high.

Needless to say, the house advantage can be used to your advantage. If you are lucky enough to have the ideal kind of dice (a pair of sixes for example), or when you roll the right number of dice (ten or more) then you could be able to get lucky enough to strike it wealthy. If, however, you have an especially bad luck run with your draws, or your bids, or your excursions to the danger chute, then the odds are stacked heavily against you. However, a lucky streak does not need to last, and in case you can get back on track before the final bell rings then you can get an opportunity of outracing all of your competitors.

1 method of beating the house advantage is by making sure your bid, your choice of tiles, your throws, and your plan can beat the odds. As an example, if you are planning on making a straight bid to win the jackpot, you should observe how the only real method of winning here would be to win without needing to roll any dice. In other words, pick a number that's very likely to come up as the number drawn - something that can not be picked by the machine. This is called being"pre-determined." Needless to say, there isn't any guarantee you will win here - you still need luck, but you can reduce the risk by taking as many of these pre-determined choices as possible.

Needless to say, the single most effective way to beat the odds is to play the game using pure luck - without even looking at the cards! This is, of course, very insecure, as you run the risk of getting the"Hazard" chute, meaning if it hits the jackpot, you'll get nothing whatsoever and will be forced to cover any amount by obtaining an equal or worse outcome as the wheel would have given you. But this is, generally , the best way to play the Chuck-A Luck game. There is certainly nothing wrong with using both good and bad fortune to win, or with using one or two unique forms of fortune (or"hazard" as they're referred to in the Chuck-A Luck world).
